Thanks to Paul Allen’s impeccable contacts, we have had an email from Mark Carroll who is currently director of track and field at one of the United States leading universities, Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mark used to run with Jim Harvey, who ran with Halesowen in the late sixties and early seventies and is keen to recruit young athletes to the university’s scholarship programme.
Here in full, is Mark’s email:
Jim Harvey gave me your email and says to say hello!
I am the director of track and field/xc at Drake University in Des Moines Iowa for the last year and half. Prior to that I was Head XC/Distance coach for 8 years at Auburn University.
I am originally from Cork, Ireland and had a long career under Jim’s excellent coaching.
I am building a strong team here at Drake and have quite a few scholarships available especially on the women’s side. I already have athletes from Ireland, France, Austria, Germany, Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Australia and about to have athletes from Hungary and England.
Drake is an excellent school academically – nationally recognized and boasts a 99% job placement within 6 months of graduation!
We also host the historic Drake Relays every April and our stadium seats 14,000+ around a new blue mondo track affectionately known as the ‘Blue Oval’.
Please pass along my email and numbers to any athletes looking for scholarships as an undergraduate or graduate student. We will take good care of them here.
In short we are looking for girls around 4:30 (1500m), sub 10 (3000m) and sub 17 (5000m).
On the men’s side 3:50 (1500m), 8:15 (3000m) and 14:20’s (5000m). We can look at XC and steeplechase also.
I appreciate any help,
