After another busy weekend of athletics I’d like to highlight the recent achievements of our athletes.
Now I’ll start with this one as it’s not very often we get the chance to highlight a victory for one of our athletes on the international stage so we should all applaud the performance this weekend of Josie Oliarnyk who was competing for England in the International Indoor Elan Meeting an international match in Bratislavia.
Josie was competing in the Long Jump and produced an indoor best performance of 6 metres 16 cm to win the event, a brilliant performance from Josie which stands her in good stead for the rest of the indoor season and beyond.
We also saw success in the Welsh Indoor Championships, with Katrina Simpson finishing third in the senior 400 metres in 58.52 seconds. Earlier in the afternoon, Katrina qualified by finishing first in her heat in 58.33 seconds (pictured above).
On Saturday 26th January on a more gritty note, we had competitors of all ages taking part in the Midland Cross Country Championships on a tough, demanding course at Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa.
Many thanks to Barry Thompson and Mick Mielczarek for sorting out the club tent, to provide shelter on a wet and windy day.
- 6th place for Lily Higgins in the Under 20 Women’s race, a promising performance after recent injury.
- Kristian Bayley finishing in a creditable 17th in the Under 20 Men’s race.
- John Hill finished 1st M65 in the Midland Masters competition held in conjunction with the main race.
- Paul Allen – 4th place in the Masters Over 70 category.
- Dr Dave Lewis – 6th place in the Masters Over 50 category.
It was also great to see club stalwart, Billy Nock presenting the prizes in his role as president of the Midland Cross Country Association
Finally, looking to the future, next Sunday 3rd February we have eight young athletes representing the West Midlands in the Regional Sportshall Finals at North Solihull Sports Centre.
A big shout out to Alex Taylor, Cerys Brook, Penny Cross, Jessica Dale, Louis Glynn, Natalia Pestova, Ben Ward and James Lee – Good luck to you all.
