Halesowen Active Travel launch day

Halesowen Active Travel launch day

The official opening of the new Manor Way road crossing and the launch of West Midlands Cycle Hire in Halesowen was celebrated in a special event at the club.

The Halesowen Active Travel Fair was held jointly by the cycling and athletics sections, with support from West Midlands Cycle Hire and Halesowen BID.

Distinguished guests included the new Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Sue Greenaway and the MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis, James Morris.

On behalf of the club, Barry Griffiths was presented the Guinness World Record certificate awarded to Kevin Brown, who set a World Record on the velodrome track for pulling a Land Rover vehicle.

Kevin, who represented Great Britain in the discus at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and Jamaica in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, donated his certificate to the club in recognition for their help in staging his successful World Record attempt in October 2020.

A range of sporting activities were held throughout the afternoon including cycling and athletics training for children.

Matt Allen and Dave Turvey put an enthusiastic group of young athletes through their paces in the long jump and hurdles, and Steven Millington took charge of the howler javelin training.

There was also free use of the cycle hire bikes around the velodrome track and musical entertainment from the Drums Aloud group of African drummers.

Thanks go to everyone who helped organise the event and to all those who came down on the day.
