Halesowen para athlete Maddie Down has won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Running for Team England in the first final of the athletics programme at the Scotstoun Stadium, the 18 year old set a new personal best time of 12.86 seconds in the T38 100 metres.
2018 champion Sophie Hahn won gold in 12.78 seconds with defending champion Olivia Breen edging a tight photo finish with Down to take silver, with just two-thousandths of a second separating the two athletes.
After winning 100 metres and Long Jump gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games three years ago, Maddie was keen to make her mark in her senior Games debut.
“To be able to step up onto the senior stage and get a medal has been great,” Maddie told England Athletics.
“Coming into the race, it was always in the back of mind to get a medal and to be able to do it and run that quick as well means a lot.”
Maddie is coached by Mike Bennett at the University of Birmingham and is a member of Halesowen Athletics Club, a 250 member-strong club based on Manor Way, one mile from M5 Junction 3.
She has one more chance for a medal in Glasgow this Friday in the final of the long jump.
